So, it's kind of a busy month for us since my little man turns 2 next week and my big man turns 5 in 3 weeks. It means a joint birthday party for our families and, for the first time, a kids' party with some of our favorite playmates. Thankfully, one of my co-workers has a son who also has a January birthday, allowing us to do a joint shindig at her house (which is a HUGE blessing as we live in a tiny condo!). We're hoping the snow holds out and her husband's hard work on the sledding run doesn't go to pot if we ever get out of this arctic hole we're in!
Since all 3 boys are huge fans of tractors, particularly John Deere tractors, we've put together a green and yellow party theme for them. I started working on the cupcake toppers, pulling my ideas from http://cakecentral.com/g/i/2202515/triple-lemon-cupcakes-with-a-cherry-on-top/ . What do you think? My plan is to put them on "dirt" covered cupcakes. Fairly certain no child (or adult for that matter!) can resist "dirt" cake!
Fondant Tractors |
After knocking those of my list, I worked on the more challenging pieces of my boys' family birthday cake. Matthew (the soon-to-be 5 year old) requested a Transformers themed party. All well and good until he picked out the cake he really liked after I searched Pinterest. This was his selection...
Now, since this a new blog, my collection of previous cakes isn't on here (a task that is requested by my buddy Julia) so you have no idea that this kind of thing is right up my alley and I seriously love this cake! One of these days I will take Julia's advice and post the cakes from my previous endeavors. However, this is what I've been working on...
Fondant "hardware" |
I think they look great and Matthew was thrilled! Grey fondant and then a little silver lustre dust mixed with lemon extract to get the metallic look. Naturally, I ran out of fondant and/or the supplies to make it so the rest of the pieces will have to wait.
